Cherry Orchard Primary Academy – Update

Take a look at our fly through of Cherry Orchard Primary Academy with Leigh Academies Trust at Ebbsfleet Garden City.

Cherry Orchard Primary Academy and Community Centre project includes a two-form entry primary school and nursery, a community centre and public realm, and will form a key component of the new neighbourhood. To reinforce the focus on ‘community’, the design  has brought the community centre and primary school together into one building. The form of the building and its internal organisation is designed to be clear and cognitive, while responding to the local topography.

Referencing the site’s history as a quarry, the building is wrapped in a series of stratified elements in the form of wild flower and sedum covered cantilevered roofs and canopies, which are finished in pale coloured fibre cement panelling.

The roofs have been considered as the building’s fifth elevation, and will provide a visual amenity for adjacent buildings located further up the sloping site, while helping to enhance the local environment by encouraging biodiversity on the site. The rhythm and arrangement of external materials and window openings ensure that the building’s envelope is animated by the shadows of passing sunlight throughout the day and from occupation during the evening.
