Meet our new Research Assistant, Megan

Megan Land

We’re thrilled to welcome Megan Land to the LEP team! Joining us as a Research Assistant while finishing her History degree, Megan will be diving into the stories behind the buildings we work on and supporting our teams with her research skills. Get to know her better in our quick-fire Q&A below.

What first inspired you to go into the field of historical research?

I’ve always loved history – an interest sparked by an incredible teacher at secondary school.  My passion grew even further during work experience with the Lead Conservation Officer at my local council, which gave me a first-hand look at the fascinating stories behind old buildings.  All of this led me down a path of loving building history – I’m always happy to fall down a good historical rabbit hole!

what have you been up to before joining LEP?

I’m currently in my final year at the University of Kent, Canterbury, studying history, and I’m now lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with the LEP team part-time between lectures.  I got to know many of the LEP team previously during a great few weeks of work experience at the practice, so I was thrilled to hear of this research assistant opportunity.

As part of my degree, I spent a year studying abroad in New Brunswick, Canada – an incredible experience and adventure!  I’ll be finishing my degree in Spring 2026, after which I hope to continue in a career focused around my love of historic buildings.

What are you most looking forward to getting stuck into at LEP?

I’m excited to explore more of the buildings around Kent and the local area.  Since I’m not originally from here, it’s been fascinating to immerse myself in the local history.  I’m also looking forward to applying my theoretical knowledge in a practical way and bringing the stories of buildings and their inhabitants to life.

Which LEP value (creative, collaborative, knowledgeable, authentic, caring) do you most connect with, and why?

For me, it would be Caring. Outside of work and uni, I’ve been heavily involved in climate change and Youth Voice projects, and I really enjoy connecting with people and making a positive impact.

Do you have a favourite building, space or place?  What makes it so special?

‘La Piscine’ – a former swimming pool-turned-museum in Roubaix, France.  It’s such a creative use of a beautiful Art Nouveau building.  It’s mesmerising – the stained-glass casts it’s colourful light onto the old pool, with former changing rooms reimagined as a gallery space – I highly recommend a visit!

What helps you switch off outside of work?

I love reading – which comes in handy as a researcher!  I also enjoy crafting and creating things.  Musical theatre is also up there on my list of passions, and love a trip to see a show with family and friends.

And finally – the important one – what’s your favourite biscuit?!

Lotus Biscoff! The cream-filled sandwich ones in particular! The taste, the textural mix… need I say more?… Plus they’re vegan!!
