New Pub for Ebbsfleet Garden City Receives Planning

The Chalk Yard

Lee Evans Partnership is proud to announce that planning permission has been granted for The Chalk Yard, a new pub and boutique hotel for Shepherd Neame, Britain’s oldest brewery.

Our architectural and planning teams, led Giles Taylor and Nathan Anthony respectively, worked closely with Shepherd Neame to develop the design for the landmark building, located on a key transport route – ‘Fastrack’ – at the centre of the Castle Hill development at Ebbsfleet Garden City.

Shepherd Neame’s Chief Executive, Jonathan Neame, said:

“This is an exciting project at the heart of a major development in North Kent at the strategic crossroads between London and the Garden of England.

“This fits perfectly with our programme of investment in our pub and hotel estate, providing a great drinking and dining experience and high-quality accommodation for our customers in unique and interesting locations.”

The scheme will provide extensive bar and restaurant facilities catering for 150 covers, together with flexible function space, and external terraced seating and garden.  Above, accommodation will comprise of staff apartment space, together with 17 boutique hotel rooms.  Externally, car parking is provided, incorporating electric charging points.

The distinctive roof form draws influence from the original industrial buildings which would have sat within the quarry, together with the quarry edge itself.

The grey/buff tonal brickwork is reflective of the quarry walls. In contrast to the brickwork, key details to the building will be finished with Corten Steel detailing to provide a strong connection with the sites industrial past.

Permission was granted by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation on 18th December 2019, with the Chief Planning Officer, Mark Pullin, saying:

“This is a landmark building that will be at the very heart of Castle Hill in Ebbsfleet Garden City.  We’re very pleased that so much consideration has been given to the look and appearance and that it is so strongly based on the area’s history in what will be a high-quality building”.

The Next Step

The LEP team look forward to progressing with the scheme, with construction planned to commence in the Spring of 2020, with completion scheduled for the Summer of 2021.
