New Facilities for Queen Elizabeth Grammar in Faversham

LEP has been working closely with Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School over a number of years on various schemes to improve their campus accommodation in Faversham.

Our architectural and planning teams are delighted to confirm that planning permission has been secured for a much-needed upgrade to the existing dining canteen at the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Faversham, with our planners additionally securing permission for a new sports hall in conjunction with steel frame specialists, Kent Structures.

New Canteen Facilities

The existing student canteen at the school has been undersized for a number of years.  The proposed improvements will provide better facilities for both existing students and for the future needs of the school.  Another key advantage will be the improvements in accessibility.

The single storey canteen extension and will essentially create an infill between existing school buildings.  A biodiverse green roof is proposed which, as well as being aesthetically attractive, will double-up as a sustainable drainage solution for the new structure.

Designed to mirror proportions of the existing surrounding campus buildings, the infill will create a better sense of cohesiveness, currently lacking in its current form.   Material palette and design will enhance the appearance, providing high-quality modern design.

The project will also include new soft and hard landscaping which will provide interesting external social spaces, as well as enhancing accessibility and wayfinding through the campus.

New Sports Hall

LEP’s planning team are also working alongside steel frame specialists, Kent Structures, on a proposed new sports hall development.

Demolition of existing building and development of new 4-court sports hall with changing facilities and associated space has been granted permission, which will enhance and support the school’s sporting ambitions.

The current sports hall facilities fall below current standards and require substantial improvement to meet recommended Sport England requirements.  Uninsulated, the existing building struggles to maintain a comfortable environment for pupils.  Although remaining similar in scale to the existing facilities, the new building will greatly improve the quality of facilities available to the school, and will meet (and exceed) Sport England requirements – providing excellent high-quality facilities of which the school can be proud.

About the School

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) is one of the regions highest-performing schools, with a large pupil roll of around 900.  Constantly striving to offer exception facilities to students, the School continues to invest heavily in updating accommodation on their campus.  Other works at the school completed by LEP include the sixth form teaching block, completed in 2013.

Both schemes are due to commence on site shortly and upon completion will positively enhance the school’s facilities and campus experience.  We look forward to seeing the works progress on site.
